World number one Scottie Scheffler underlined his status as the best player on the planet by winning The Masters for a second time at Augusta National.

Leading by one shot going into the final round, America’s Scheffler carded a four-under par 68 to grind down his rivals and win by four strokes.

The 27-year-old finished on 11 under par, four clear of Swedish debutant Ludvig Aberg. Collin Morikawa, England’s Tommy Fleetwood and Max Homa were third, fourth and fifth respectively.

Bryson DeChambeau, Cameron Smith and Xander Schauffele were the only other players to finish below-par across the week.

Several players had chances heading into the final day but a series of challengers fell away, unable to cope with the brilliance and consistency of Scheffler, who won his first major on this course in 2022.

The overnight leader made a birdie on the third hole only to bogey the fourth and then dropped back to -6 with another dropped shot on the seventh.

But three successive birdies followed at the turn and Scheffler also gained shots at the 14th and 16th in an efficient and classy display.

Given his dominance and the absence of genuine challengers, the final few holes were a procession for Scheffler, who has held the number one ranking for over 80 weeks.

Scheffler becomes the 18th player to win multiple Green Jackets and the fourth-youngest behind Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Seve Ballesteros. Bubba Watson was the most recent to achieve the feat, with his victories coming in 2012 and 2014.

Rory McIlroy finished T22 on four-over par while defending champion John Rahm only just made the top 50 with +9. Of players to make the cut, Tiger Woods finished bottom on +16 after a difficult weekend.

Now a multiple Masters champion, Scheffler will look to take his major wins elsewhere, beginning at next month’s PGS Championship at the Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky.
