Nawaz Sharif declares victory in Pakistan general elections

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif claimed victory in the country’s general elections on Friday and said that his party, Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), emerged as the single largest party in the country.

However, he claimed that the party doesn’t have majority to form government on its own.

“We do not have the majority to form the government on our own. So, we will invite other parties to form the government,” he said. He added that the party would approach Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians’ Asif Ali Zardari and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F)’s Maulana Fazlur Rehman to discuss the formation of a coalition government.

Nawaz Sharif said that his son, Shehbaz Sharif, would be holding talks with Asif Ali and Maulana Fazlur on behalf of the party.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) data shows that results of 139 constituencies have been declared, which include 55 independents (mostly supported by PTI), PML-N 43, PPP 35 and other seats going to smaller parties, news agency PTI reported.

A party must win 133 seats out of the 265 seats to form a government.
