Jane Fonda admits she was CONCERNED about Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck's rekindled romance and felt as though the couple were 'trying to prove something'

Jennifer Lopez’s close friend Jane Fonda admits that she had doubts about her rekindled romance with now-husband Ben Affleck.

In Lopez’s new doc The Greatest Love Story Never Told, the two-time Academy Award winner, 86, voices her concerns to the singer, 54, and touches on rumors that Ben is ‘unhappy’ in the marriage.

Lopez and Fonda have been friends for nearly 20 years since co-starring in the 2005 rom-com Monster-In-Law.

‘I want you to know that I don’t entirely know why, but I feel invested in you and Ben, and I really want this to work,’ she told Lopez, as reported by Variety.

‘However, this is my concern. Like, it feels too much like you’re trying to prove something instead of just living it.’

Referring to Ben and Jen’s red carpet PDA, Fonda added: ‘You know, every other photograph is the two of you kissing and the two of you hugging.’

Lopez took Fonda’s relationship analysis with stride as she replied with a laugh: ‘That’s just us living our life.’

Lopez and Affleck began dating against in May 2021 — 17 years after calling off their engagement in 2004.

The actor proposed in April 2022 and the pair married in July 2022 at a Las Vegas courthouse before holding a lavish ceremony in Georgia the following month.

The happy couple have faced speculation about their relationship since tying the knot — including rumors that there may be trouble in paradise.

Photos of Ben looking ‘bored’ and ‘unhappy’ while sitting beside JLo at the 2023 Grammy Awards went viral on social media.

They’ve also been accused of having tense interactions on and off the red carpet — the most famous being a clip of a ‘miserable’ Affleck closing Lopez’s car door.

Fonda admitted to Lopez that the online chatter ‘scared’ her.

‘I got real scared, you know, with all that s**t about the Grammys and he looks unhappy and I’m like, “Oh, my God, what’s happening?”‘ she said.

Lopez immediately shutdown Fonda’s concerns as she replied: ‘Nothing [is happening]! He was like, “I’ve become the symbol of the beleaguered man.”‘

The Greatest Love Story Never Told — out February 27 — documents the making of Lopez’s ninth studio album, This Is Me… Now and musical movie This Is Me… Now: A Love Story.

The album is a sequel to her 2002 album, This Is Me… Then, and it’s her first studio album in a decade.

Meanwhile, the cinematic experience follows Jennifer’s friends — including Fonda — as they stage an intervention amid fears she may be a sex addict following three lavish weddings.

The album and its accompanying Amazon Prime Video film will be released on February 16.

Ahead of launch, Lopez made an appearance on Today with Hoda & Jenna where she admitted that she feels jealous when people try to flirt with Affleck.

Jennifer and Hoda Kotb were playing a fun game entitled ‘This Is Me… Now… or Then?’ when the songstress made the revelation.

Using paddles to answer either ‘NOW’ or ‘THEN’, Jennifer answered a series of questions about her life – including whether or not she ‘gets jealous if someone hits on your significant other.’

Jennifer immediately displayed the ‘NOW’ side of her paddle and glared. ‘Don’t play with me. Do not play with me,’ she remarked.

In the event someone would hit on Ben in front of her, Jennifer said she would advise them to ‘step all the way off’ – but in a calm tone.

‘First of all, I’m a lover, not a fighter, but I will let them know in a very elegant and lady-like way to step all the way off,’ she said.

Appearing on The Kyle And Jackie O Show on Thursday, Jennifer explained it took her almost two decades to ‘figure herself out’ before the ‘universe opened up’ and allowed her to reunite with her ex lover.

‘I fell in love with the love of my life [earlier in my life] and for whatever reasons… we needed to grow and do other things,’ she began.

‘We both went off and had children with other people and other relationships but, you know, in mind I kind of had it like, “Oh, that was kind of the one” and so when we got back together.

‘I couldn’t believe it and I don’t think he could either. It’s not something we ever planned. We really had moved on with our lives but when we reconnected, it was almost instant and we just knew.’

Jennifer went on to describe her personal journey between relationships with Ben, and how having children made her a better person.

‘I was on a real journey ever since my kids were born,’ said the popstar, who shares twins Max and Emme, 16, with ex Marc Anthony.

Ben is also father to two teenage daughters – Violet, 18, and Seraphina, aka Fin, 15 – from his decade-long marriage to Jennifer Garner, which ended in 2018.

The I’m Real hitmaker said she spent time during her marriage to Marc developing her sense of self, explaining: ‘[I was trying] to be better and figure myself out and be the best person I can be so I can be a great mum, and a great example for them.’

‘Then when I got divorced, it kind of kick-started another phase of me trying to figure out myself and relationships and things like that,’ she continued.

Following her divorce, Jennifer endured a string of failed relationships and eventually decided to remain single.

It was at that point that the songstress finally rekindled romance with Ben.

‘I was like, ‘I’m good on my own, I’m fine, I love my life”. And when you get to that place, I think that’s when the universe kind of opened up to me and was like, “OK now you’re ready”,’ she said.
