Cross River loses over 700 lives, property worth billions to communal crises – Group

A group, Partner For Peace (P4P) in the Niger Delta, Cross River State chapter, disclosed on Wednesday that communal conflicts have claimed over 700 lives and destroyed assets worth billions in the state.

In its Valentine’s day message to the people of Cross River, tagged: “Happy Valentine’s Day from Partners for peace CRS-Let love lead”, the peace advocates emphasized the need to nip the crisis from the bud.

Signed by the State Coordinator, Comrade Ukorebi Essien, the statement reflects the deaths of over 700 people and properties worth billions of naira lost due to communal crises and other forms of conflict in the state over the years.

He noted that a proactive approach to conflict resolution is crucial for the state’s sustainable development and prosperity, especially as the agricultural season approaches.

“In a world filled with challenges, it is the love we share and the connection we build that will bring warmth and meaning to lives.

“Together let’s continue to support one another, uplift those around and spread the message of love in all that we do.

“May this valentine’s day serve as a reminder of the importance of compassion, empathy and unity,” he said.

Explaining its commitment to fostering peace and harmony, he emphasized that love and understanding can bridge divides and build stronger and more resilient communities.

The group observed that the escalating social conflicts in the state require concrete attention and action, but called on the government to prioritize and invest in comprehensive peacebuilding initiatives.

“We appreciate Governor Bassey Edet Otu, for his commendable people-oriented government through the provision of basic amenities.

“We sincerely call on the government to join hands with P4P and other development partners in building a state where every citizen feels secure, valued and included.

“By working together we can create a peaceful future for the Cross River State,” Essien stated.
