Top Republican Mike Gallagher says his ‘no’ vote on Alejandro Mayorkas’ impeachment shouldn’t have come as a surprise to GOP leadership.

Gallagher, who chairs the House Select Committee on China, said the ’embarrassing’ vote for Republicans – who failed to capture enough support to impeach Biden’s top border official in a spectacular floor fiasco – could have been avoided.

Republicans suffered a series of consecutive legislative failures yesterday as chaos grips both the House and Senate.

Immediately after the Mayorkas vote, Speaker Mike Johnson’s $17.6 billion Israel aid standalone bill tanked in another humiliating defeat for Republicans in a span of 15 minutes.

And earlier in the day, Senate Republicans summarily killed the $118 billion bipartisan border and security supplemental deal they spent months negotiating – and only released two days ago.

Gallagher, a rising star in the party who does not usually create problems for GOP leadership, explained his ‘no’ vote in an op-ed published by the Wall Street Journal. He was one of the four total Republicans who tanked the measure including Reps. Ken Buck and Tom McClintock.

He states that Mayorkas’ takedown by House Republicans would ‘pry open the Pandora’s box’ for future impeachments of Cabinet secretaries.

‘Impeachment not only would fail to resolve Mr. Biden’s border crisis but would also set a dangerous new precedent that would be used against future Republican administrations,’ he wrote.

But although Gallagher isn’t usually one of the thorns in the side of Speaker Mike Johnson, and the rest of GOP leadership, he said his vote shouldn’t have come as a surprise.

He had been whipping ‘no for over a month,’ he told radio host Hugh Hewitt Wednesday morning.

Gallagher urged his colleagues to ‘reject’ the ‘Pelosi precedent’ after the former speaker used impeachment as a ‘weapon’ against former President Donald Trump without evidence.

‘Creating a new, lower standard for impeachment, one without any clear limiting principle, wouldn’t secure the border or hold Mr. Biden accountable,’ he wrote in the op-ed.

Over 302,000 migrant encounters were made at the southern border in December, according to official Department of Homeland Security figures – an all-time record

Johnson spokesperson Raj Shah said Republicans ‘fully intend to bring Articles of Impeachment against Secretary Mayorkas back to the floor when we have the votes for passage.’

‘It’s a delay is all this is,’ Homeland Security Chair Mark Green, R-Tenn., said of the vote.

GOP Whip Tom Emmer told DailyMail.com on Wednesday that he ‘respects’ his colleagues that voted against impeachment, but disagrees with them.
