Adidas Goes Green: New Solar Powered Headphones with Theoretically Infinite Power to Launch

Adidas announced a pair of solar powered headphones called the RPT-02 SOL that would theoretically last forever. When not being charged, the headphones are reportedly capable of 80 hours of playback time.

The Theoretical Benefit of Using Solar Powered Headphones

Theoretically, as long as users are able to get enough sunlight or use the headphones outside with sunlight, the headphones could potentially last forever. With no opportunity for charging under the sun, however, the headphones will be capable of 80 hours of playback.

Although solar powered gadgets aren’t a particularly new technology, not a lot of big companies like Adidas invest in the creation of these types of gadgets. Now, the company has decided to bring the solar powered headphones for a wider audience to gain access to.

Adidas Launches the RPT-02 SOL Similar to the Urbanista Los Angeles

According to the story by The Verge, solar powered gadgets aren’t really a new technology. Companies like Logitech have already sold keyboards that won’t need to be plugged for over a decade but solar powered headsets are not that common.

The Adidas RPT-02 SOL will be a $230 pair of “self-charging Bluetooth cans with Exeger’s Powerfoyle solar cells built right into the recycled plastic headband, as per Engadget. The article notes that the solar technology used is exactly the same with the solar-powered headphones from Urbanista Los Angeles with a reserve battery life capable of lasting up to 80 hours.

The Urbanista Los Angeles was Able to Show Low Battery Consumption

Although The Verge notes that they have not yet tried the solar headset from Adidas, solar tech did work when the Urbanistas’ headset was tried. Despite being indoors, they were able to see low battery consumption.

As per Jon Porter, a colleague noted by The Verge, “the beauty of the Los Angeles headphones” is that users do not really have to think about them. When introducing the product, there was still no mention of active noise canceling or any other fancy audio codecs unlike with the Los Angeles headphones.

Adidas RPT-02 SOL Specifications Released: USB-C Port, Microphone, and Water Resistance

Adidas’ solar headphones, however, were reportedly IPX4 water resistant and included both a microphone as well as a USB-C port just in case users needed to use a backup charger. As reported by Engadget, the headphones’ predecessor, Zound, was capable of handling “remarkably good sound.”

Aside from Adidas, Urbanista is also getting ready to bring new Powerfoyle panels to its wireless earbuds which is technically the gadget’s charging case. The company called Blue Tiger claims that it will be the first solar powered communications headset.

The new headset was announced in late July and with both the noise-canceling boom mic and Powerfoyle cells, the Blue Tiger Solare is priced at $220.
