Ajla Tomljanović achieves career milestone with come-from-behind win at Cincinnati WTA 1000 tournament

Australia's Ajla Tomljanović has staged a stunning comeback to beat Russian Veronika Kudermetova and reach her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal in Cincinnati.

Key points:

  • Ajla Tomljanović triumphed 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 over Veronika Kudermetova
  • The Australian next faces Petra Kvitová
  • World number one Iga Świątek lost in the round of 16

A set down, Tomljanović defeated Kudermetova 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 to continue her fine form ahead of next week's US Open at Flushing Meadows.

The world number 63 is a two-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist but had never previously reached the same stage at one of the prestigious WTA 1000 tournaments.

Tomljanović's reward is a last-eight meeting with two-time major winner Petra Kvitová, who eliminated Wimbledon finalist and fifth seed Ons Jabeur 6-1, 4-6, 6-0.

There were several upsets elsewhere in the women's draw, with world number one Iga Świątek, reigning US Open champion Emma Raducanu and second-seed Anett Kontaveit all bowing out in the round of 16.

Raducanu had beaten Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka in the previous rounds but was brought down to Earth with a bump, in a 7-5, 6-4 loss to American seventh-seed Jessica Pegula.

Another American, Madison Keys, earlier accounted for Świątek, to take her place in the quarterfinals and register her first win over a reigning world number one.

Świątek saved four match points but was far from her best as she exited a second tournament in the North American swing at the last-16 stage after last week's Canadian Open.

Keys will next face Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, who beat Alison Riske-Amritraj 6-2, 6-4.

World number two Kontaveit looked to have taken charge of her match against Zhang Shuai when she won the opening set at a canter but her Chinese opponent dug deep to claim a stunning 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 upset.
