Luis Suarez bid an emotional farewell to Atletico Madrid at the weekend  Former Liverpool star has been linked with returns to Ajax and Barcelona Aston Villa are the Premier League side to have shown most interest in Suarez Here, Sportsmail assesses how Suarez would fit in at sides interested in him

Few 35-year-olds would have quite the list of suitors Luis Suarez appears to have gathered after the announcement he is leaving Atletico Madrid at the end of the season.

The Uruguayan bid an emotional farewell to the Spanish giants at the weekend, but behind his teary face is a determined figure wanting one more shot in European football.

The former Barcelona striker wants to compete at the World Cup this winter and by turning down various offers from South America in January, he clearly believes staying on this continent will give him the best possible chance of doing so.

The 35-year-old’s attention will now switch to one last hurrah in Europe ahead of the World Cup

Sportsmail revealed during the January transfer window Suarez wants to play until the end of next season before assessing the possibility of finishing his career in America alongside close friend Lionel Messi.

He was ready to move at the start of the calendar year after finding himself on the bench more often than not under Diego Simeone this season, but seemingly did not find the right club.

Now a whole host are lining up at his door once more. Here, Sportsmail assess where the ex-Liverpool star could end up, of the teams that have so far been linked with a move for him…

Ajax

It was at the Dutch giants that Suarez made his name before heading to Liverpool in 2011.

The 35-year-old spent three-and-a-half seasons at the club after joining in the summer of 2007, and went on to score 111 goals.

The Eredivisie giants were not afraid to bring Klaas-Jan Huntelaar back to the club in 2017 and now there is the chance to seal another veteran forward’s return.

He would also be joining a side that has been crowned Dutch champions for the 36th time. But what state that team is in by the time the transfer window shuts is up for debate.

A managerial change has already been announced, with Alfred Schreuder replacing new Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag. But that is unlikely to be the only departure from the Johan Cruyff Arena this summer.

Jurrien Timber has been linked with United and could follow Ten Hag to Old Trafford, while Noussair Mazraoui and Ryan Gravenberch are reportedly on Bayern Munich’s radar.

The key to all this could be Sebastien Haller. Borussia Dortmund and Man United have both been linked with the 27-year-old Ivorian and he would perhaps be the most high-profile departure.

It would also deal a major blow to Ajax’s hopes of retaining their Dutch crown following his 21 Eredivisie goals this term.

But stay and Suarez may well find himself not a regular starter. Schreuder has largely played two central forwards with Club Brugge this season but he may look at Ten Hag’s flexibility in operating with a lone forward as another option.

That would likely see Suarez relegated again to the bench if that does turn out to be Schreuder’s preferred system in attacking areas. The Dutch giants are also unlikely to be able to offer Suarez the chance to win one more Champions League crown.

Barcelona

Perhaps the most shocking of all the options given the manner in which he was unceremoniously dumped at the end of his first spell.

Suarez is adored by the Barca fans following his time in one of the world’s best-ever attacking line-ups alongside Messi and Neymar.

He scored 195 goals in 283 appearances and also provided 113 assists during his time at the Catalan club, helping the club win four LaLiga titles, as many Copa del Reys and the 2014-15 Champions League.

But even though he has now departed, the way Ronald Koeman told Suarez he was no longer part of his plans continues to leave a bitter taste in the mouths of Barcelona supporters.

Reports suggest Suarez is ready to overlook that, claiming he is even willing to slash his salary to return to Camp Nou this summer. And Xavi’s men do look destined to at least compete for top honours – domestically if not in Europe – next season.

Luis Suarez won four LaLiga titles and the 2014-15 Champions League in his time at Barcelona

But competition and finances will be an issue at his former club. Barcelona may be in a slightly better financial situation than when Suarez left in 2020 but reports suggest they will still need to sell up to nine players to ensure they do not incur further problems.

It means Barcelona will have to be smart with their investments and adding to the forward stockpiling at the club is perhaps then not advisable. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will be the first choice for at least another season.

The Catalan giants will also hope Ansu Fati is over his injury problems to compete with the Gabon star, while Memphis Depay and Ferran Torres can also play centrally if needed.

The move to bring Suarez back would appeal to the sentimental side of the club, but right now that is something they can ill-afford to give into in a bid to sort out their finances.

Aston Villa

The first reports linking Suarez linked with a shock move to the West Midlands were made in January in Spain, and it does seem to be little more than putting two and two together.

Philippe Coutinho completing his reunion with Steven Gerrard at Villa Park – a move that has now turned permanent – made any January move for Suarez unlikely.

But a Premier League destination – eight years after he left Gerrard the player and Liverpool – was not been ruled out then and is unlikely to have been now.

Sportsmail revealed last week Gerrard is keen to improve his attacking options and is willing to part ways with West Ham target Ollie Watkins to make that happen.

Suarez has also been heavily linked with reuniting with Steven Gerrard (right) at Aston Villa

That would open up a sizeable gap in the squad but Suarez may need convincing beyond the sentimental fact of reuniting with two players who nearly led Liverpool to the 2013-14 Premier League title.

Villa will not even be in the Europa Conference League next season, which would give Suarez fewer opportunities to impress before Uruguay’s World Cup squad is announced.

But few managers in the game currently will know how to get him ticking quite like his former captain, and Gerrard would no doubt devise a system to try and extract the best performances from Suarez.

It will ultimately come down as to whether any team makes their interest as clear as Villa and could perhaps offer him a shot at European football for one last time.

Inter Milan

Gerrard is not the only manager who wants to add firepower to his squad, with Simone Inzaghi reportedly wanting other options to Edin Dzeko and Lautaro Martinez.

That desire is only likely to grow if city rivals AC Milan win their final match of the season away at Sassuolo to claim the Serie A title ahead of Inter.

But it is the departure of Argentina star Martinez – who has scored 21 Serie A goals in 34 appearances this season – that could open the door for a switch to Italy for his fellow South American.

Lautaro Martinez has been heavily linked with a summer move away from Inter Milan

Arsenal and Tottenham have both been linked with moves and the price could be well below the £90m figure Barcelona were quoted a couple of seasons ago.

But whether Inzaghi would want to replace a 24-year-old striker who has yet to reach his peak with a 35-year-old who has well passed his is unlikely, particularly as his only current alternative is 36-year-old Dzeko.

A younger striker than Suarez would therefore be the most logical step for Inter this summer, and it is no surprise there are reports Inter have already turned down the chance to sign him.

Sevilla

A team that on the face of it could do with a more experienced forward, having scored the fewest of any of the current top five in LaLiga.

Youssef En-Nesyri is a player they can build around but with injuries this season, he has struggled for game time.

Rafa Mir is therefore the only player who has got into double figures for goals scored for a team who occupied second for much of the season.

Youssef En-Nesyri is a player they can build around but with injuries they have few other scorers

Mir and En-Nesyri have yet to hit their peak and therefore could learn plenty on movement and finishing with the arrival of Suarez.

Barring a final-day collapse, the Andalusian side will have Champions League football next season. What they are less certain to have is whether Julen Lopetegui is in charge.

There are mixed messages coming out from the club about whether he will remain as boss and it is yet more managerial uncertainty.

But perhaps with Suarez not against staying in Spain, a club looking to regularly become a top four member could be a good fit.
