Australian swimming champion and Olympic gold medallist Mack Horton marries high school girlfriend Ella Walter

Rio de Janeiro Olympic gold medallist Mack Horton officially married his high school sweetheart Ella Walter over the weekend.

The Aussie swimmer, 27, tied the knot with Walter on Saturday, September 16 at Stones of the Yarra Valley in Victoria.

Walter looked stunning in a white voluminous Mariana Hardwick gown and her brown hair was tied back in a tight bun with a middle part.

The bride wore black pumps with diamond detailing on the tips.

As for Horton, the athlete looked dapper in a black suit, while his hair was neatly styled.

The newlyweds shared several photos to their Instagram account showing off their special day.

‘Married,’ they captioned their post.

In one photo, Horton tears up as he watches his bride walk down the aisle.

‘And now I’m going to cry again,’ one friend commented.

‘This moment was everything,’ added another.

A friend also wrote: ‘The most amazing wedding and the couple took everyones breath away.’

Among the stars who attended the nuptials were fellow swimming champions Cody Simpson and his girlfriend Emma McKeon.

Meanwhile, several swimming greats flooded the comments to send their well wishes, including Olympic gold medallists Gian Rooney, Bronte Campbell and Grant Hackett.

Horton and Walter announced their engagement in January 2022, with the swimmer sharing a gorgeous photo to his Instagram page of Walter beaming as she showed off her stunning trilogy diamond engagement ring.

‘To the rest of our lives,’ Horton captioned the snap alongside a Champagne emoji.

In the photo, Walter, who works as a nurse, appeared to have just emerged from the surf with wet brunette tresses and a beach setting in the backdrop.

She looked understandably elated as she rested her head in the palms of her hands, proudly showing off her elegant three-stone engagement ring.

Horton made headlines back in 2021 when he clocked the slowest leg for Australia in the heats of the men’s 4×200 metre freestyle relay at the Tokyo Olympics.

The athlete, who won gold in the 400m freestyle at the previous Games in Rio de Janeiro, was dropped from the team for the final, where Australia claimed bronze behind Great Britain and Russia.

He had predicted his omission from the relay final, moments after the heats, where Australia qualified second fastest.

‘Probably not as good as I was hoping,’ Mack told Channel Seven afterwards.

‘It was probably not good enough to get through to the final team which is heartbreaking but we got the team through and that’s all that matters.

‘It was a privilege to be part of it.’

Mack left Tokyo with a bronze medal for his swim in the relay heats.

Despite a disappointing showing in Tokyo, Mack indicated he plans to continue swimming and has his sights set on a third Olympics in 2024 in Paris.
