Following the news of Bill O’Brien leaving Ohio State to become the new Boston College head coach, the Buckeyes did not wait long to replace O’Brien. The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman reported that Chip Kelly the UCLA Bruins head coach would be leaving to take the offensive coordinator position at Ohio State.
O’Brien was the Buckeyes’ offensive coordinator for roughly three weeks before taking this new job in Boston. The O’Brien news broke this morning and just hours later Ohio State is set to hire Chip Kelly as the team’s new offensive coordinator.
With UCLA set to officially join the Big Ten conference this summer, this may be the first instance in college football history of an active head coach leaving their job to take a coordinator position within the same conference. There were rumors that Kelly was set to be fired from UCLA last season but he survived the rumors and was still the head coach. However, Kelly had an interest in leaving UCLA after this tension and is now making the move from Los Angeles to Columbus, Ohio.
Kelly and the Buckeyes hope to have one of the more prolific offenses in college football next season with two elite running backs in Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson and 5 star prospects all over the board.
