‘in favour of transparency’: cec rajiv kumar on supreme court’s electoral bonds verdict
Bhubaneswar: Days after the Supreme Court directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to publish details of electoral bonds received by political parties on its website by March 13, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar asserted that we are in favour of transparency and will take action as directed in the order.
During a press conference in Bhubaneswar, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said, “Whatever is the order of the Supreme Court, the ECI was also a party in the electoral bond case. You might have seen our affidavits. Our stand in the Supreme Court was that we are in favour of transparency and will will take action as directed by the Supreme Court.”
Notably, the Election Commission team was in Bhubaneswar to review the preparedness for the upcoming general and assembly polls due in April-May this year.
Responding to a question related to a case pending in the Supreme Court on conducting elections without EVMs, the Chief Election Commissioner said, “Let the decision come…if required, changes will be made as per the court’s direction.”
The Supreme Court on Thursday struck down the electoral bonds scheme, saying it violates the right to information and the freedom of speech and expression under the Constitution.
It has delivered a unanimous verdict on a batch of pleas challenging the legal validity of the central government’s electoral bonds scheme, which allowed for anonymous funding to political parties.
The SC has directed banks to stop further issuance of electoral bonds and the State Bank of India (SBI) shall submit details of electoral bonds purchased to date since April 12, 2019, to the Election Commission.
