This week’s Feature Artist is the emerging alt rock band who are jumping on tour with Lil Wayne.
Yep… you heard right!
They’re the act who had a 2023 that triple j Unearthed Music Director Dave Ruby Howe has described as “flawless” and a 2024 that triple j Assistant Music Director Claire Mooney is tipping to be “big”.
They’re making waves on a global scale so it’s about bloody time you met the brothers and mate combo from Gold Coast, Queensland… Selfish Sons.
Described as an “enigmatic band breaking out of Australia’s East Coast” it’s the brothers, Jordy and Finn and who’ve teamed up with their best mate, Jonty. Individually they’re incredibly talented, hardworking and passionate musicians aaaaaand music fans, whilst altogether (on top of those qualities) they make up Selfish Sons.
Joining forces on the set of a commercial before becoming family friends, the project of Selfish Sons is ingrained in the roots of a deep love of music and songwriting.
Becoming acquainted with the live scene as teenagers, getting kicked out of overaged venues was not a rare occurrence for this trio. Playing a stack of shows up and down the East Coast, the crew reflect on their very humble beginnings.
“We played shows to no one, and we did that for so many years. Every person that came to our shows, would be one of our friends”
Then amidst the global pandemic, things started picking up for them. They begun posting videos online and as a result were discovered by their talent agency and management. Fast forward a few years, these up and comers have relocated to the other side of the globe and are living on their manager’s couch in Los Angeles.
Having played shows all over the world, Selfish Sons have already hit the stage alongside acts like The Kid LAROI, The Driver Era and MAY-A. Nonetheless, they are en route to playing their biggest support slot yet… with one of the GOATs, Lil Wayne.
With a 2024 that’s already kicked off on a high, Selfish Sons have fully embraced any artist’s American dream. Gearing up to play at South By Southwest as well as a headline show at Californian venue The Roxy Theatre, they really are beginning to make a name for themselves in many different pockets of the world.
“It’s so humbling being out here because the talent is insane. Our favourite part is just being surrounded by such brilliant musicians, writers and people. We love it back home but out here it’s such a different world, such a different pace”
Selfish Sons grew up on a diet of some of the greats like The Killers, Kings of Leon, The 1975 and The Neighbourhood. However in more recent times, they’ve begun growing their community and now count acts like Chloe Dadd, Pacific Avenue and MAY-A. Not to mention acts like FELONY. (who’s toured with them) that they’ve taken under their wing.
Being an “Aussie band first and foremost” the gang hold this “pretty close to the heart”.
Always looking to give back to the people who have given them so much, Selfish Sons really do appreciate and nurture their community. They’re all about creating a wholesome and supportive culture too.
Having already achieved so much and creating such a positive atmosphere for themselves, this crew are always looking onwards and upwards.
There’s word that 2024 is yet to bring more music and hopefully a headline Aus tour somewhere down the line (eek).
Nonetheless here’s the final note from Jordy, Finn and Jonty…
“We’ve always wanted to be like a festival act. Splendour has always been a big goal for us. So please, Secret Sounds if you’re listening… Hi, how are you? Let’s chat”
