Fabiano Caruana. (X, Chessbase India)
World number two Fabiano Caruana secured a thrilling win against Armenian-turned-American Grandmaster Levon Aronian in an exciting seven-hour and six-game semi-final in the Weissenhaus Freestyle Chess Challenge. Caruana scripted a remarkable comeback and took the match to tiebreaks. He qualified for the final by registering a win in the sudden-death decider. The match was nail-biting, to say the least.
During one particular nervy moment in the semi-final, Caruana, with a heart rate of 156 and only seconds left on his clock, made a costly error by conceding a rook in a position where he was likely to win. The Italian-American GM appeared to be in brilliant form and went on to earn an advantage in the first rapid tiebreak encounter. Caruana’s heart rate kept on climbing when he lost a rook and the game.
Caruana played Rb8 without noticing the placement of Aronian’s dark-squared bishop. A similar kind of scenario occurred once again while Caruana, who had his heart rate reach the mark of 170, blundered another rook.
“I think the classical game was my best game. I think that was just a very good game. I didn’t really get much from the opening, but at some point, I think I evaluated the position better than Levon,” Caruana was quoted as saying by chess.com.
Caruana will next face world number-one Magnus Carlsen in the final of the Weissenhaus Freestyle Chess Challenge. Carlsen played out a draw with Uzbek GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov.
“No, not really, I think yesterday’s game was really a very, very tough one, it could have gone either way, but today he never really got a position where he could play for anything, and then it’s hard to use his abilities there,” Carlsen said when asked about the semi-final against Abdusattorov, as per chess.com.
Earlier in the competition, Indian GM D Gukesh conceded an elimination after he settled for a draw with Caruana. Gukesh desperately needed a victory to remain in the competition but Caruana’s experience in this format proved to be too hot to handle.
