Cliffoney Celtic removed from Sligo Southern Hotel Super League

Cliffoney Celtic have been removed from the Sligo Southern Hotel Super League for the 23/24 season after the North Sligo side was unable to field a team for their fixture against Gurteen Celtic on Sunday morning.

As this is the second time Cliffoney have been unable to fulfil a fixture this season, they were removed from the league, with a statement going out to clubs on Tuesday evening.

Rule 45 of the Sligo Leitrim District League rule book states: “Any club or team who fails to honour any of its fixtures without prior agreement with the league will incur a fine of €130 for their first offence, and forfeit the game.

“A second offence of a similar nature will see the club, its team – committee and players, fined €40 each, removed from the league and suspended from all aspects of Association Football for a period of no less than the remainder of the current season.”

League leaders Gurteen Celtic were awarded a 3-0 win after that game didn’t go ahead, and the removal of Cliffoney from the league will have huge implications for teams at the top and bottom of the Sligo Southern Hotel Super League.

Cliffoney were in sixth place in the table, and had collected eight wins in 19 games.

League rule 45(a) states: “Where a team is removed from the League all points won or lost will be zeroed. Games not played will see those teams awarded three points on a score line of 3 – 0 as will games that were played.

“Leading scorer’s goals will also be zeroed.”

They are the second club to be removed from the league after Carrick Town were removed from the Sligo Pallets Premier League for failing to fulfil fixture for the second time this season.
