Viewers praised the first guest on the Tommy Tiernan Show tonight for an open and inspiring chat on the RTÉ show dealing with the “unspoken issues of men’s health”.
Galway native and author Gerry Kelly appeared on the talk show on Saturday evening to chat about his life with prostate cancer, why an advert for a man’s pad would never appear on television and demonstrate some of the practicalities of living with prostate cancer.
During the inspiring chat, Kelly revealed to Tommy about writing his pocket book Prostate, Piddling and Passion which tackles the often taboo subject of prostate cancer, also sharing with the host some of the hardships of prostate cancer.
Gerry also opened up about feeling blessed that he has gotten to see his grandchildren, revealing that he is an “emotional fish”.
“Emotionally. It was a journey like, I suppose the two of us, there were journeys to Dublin, and we made them into train journeys and overnights. I thought we bonded well, through it.
“There was a lot of things bubbling up for me at the same time. I was glad to get the chance to have all that. Now going on to have an eight-year-old grandchild, and four and three. There were a lot of positives there bubbling.
Tommy asked: “Why when we mention vulnerability and emotion, you well up?”
“I am a bit of an emotional fish anyway. I just think, I lost probably a lot of friends around the last four or five years around my own go. And they were great friends and that. And I am getting something that they didn’t get.
They didn’t get to see their lovely grandchildren running around. The next generation, those little nippers and I got that.” He added: “I feel blessed that I got that”.
Gerry Kelly is the author of Prostate, Piddling and Passion
Viewers praised the open and honest chat with Gerry as he spoke to Tommy about prostate cancer “changing you from the man you were before the diagnosis to the man you are after the diagnosis”.
One viewer wrote: “What an absolutely brilliant interview.. not spoken about enough with men because we might be to embarrassed or to manley…”
Another added: “Fair play to him, I’d say he’s started a lot of conversations around Ireland tonight on the unspoken issues of men’s health. He’s a tonic.”
A third fan penned: “Ladies and Gents Gerry Kelly fair play Sir. True hero.” While another joked: “Fair play Gerry. Gay did the banana, now you can do the sausage.”
