Android 15 beta 1 is finally here: List of features that come with the update

Google has finally released the first public beta of Android 15, providing a sneak peek into the exciting features planned for the next iteration of its mobile operating system. This beta release has been released after two developer previews and brings a slew of new features and enhancements, giving users an early glimpse of what Google is bringing to the table with the new Android OS update. Android 15 is scheduled to be officially unveiled at Google’s annual developer conference, Google I/O, in May.

The Android 15 Beta 1 is currently available for Pixel devices enrolled in the Android Beta Program. Users who are using Pixel phones, including Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel Tablet, Pixel Fold, Pixel 8, and Pixel 8 Pro phones, can access the new update by following these steps:

– Enrol in the Android Beta Program (google.com/android/beta) with your Pixel.

– Check for System Update in Settings, download, and install Android 15 Beta.

Notably, if you are a Pixel user with a thirst for exploring upcoming features, you can download Android 15 Beta 1. However, it’s important to remember that this is pre-release software and may be less stable than the final release. While likely more stable than developer previews, consider installing it on a secondary device to avoid potential bugs or disruptions on your main phone. Also, before installing the beta version, review Google’s official release notes for Android 15 Beta 1, to know more about known issues and fixes.

Android 15 features

Once downloaded, the first beta of Android 15 brings a number of improvements and features designed to enhance the user experience.Â

Seamless App Scaling: Apps will now automatically resize to fill the entire screen, eliminating the previously translucent system bars that detracted from valuable screen space. This creates a more immersive and visually appealing experience.

App Archiving and Unarchiving: A much-requested feature, built-in support for app archiving and unarchiving allows users to free up storage space by partially removing infrequently used apps. This functionality extends to third-party app stores, giving users more control over their device’s storage.

Improved Braille Support: This update expands accessibility options by offering enhanced support for Braille displays.

Cellular Network Security Controls: A new section under Settings, “Cellular network security,” provides users with more granular control over encryption settings and network security notifications.

Wi-Fi Network Device Identification Management: A new toggle, “Send device name,” allows users to manage how their device is identified when connecting to Wi-Fi networks, offering greater control over their personal information.

Default Wallet App: Users can now set a preferred wallet app for easier access to payment functionalities. (Availability may depend on region)

Pixel Weather Widgets (Pixel Phones Only): Pixel phone users gain access to new Pixel Weather widgets for a more personalised weather experience.

While all the above features look promising, Android 15 might include more in the final release. There are rumours of a focus on smoother hardware and software integration, potentially paving the way for features like satellite messaging capabilities and a desktop mode similar to Samsung’s DeX. These possibilities will likely be further explored at Google I/O.”
