The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed new payment rates for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) in 2024. This will result in a cost of living increase for millions of recipients from April.

PIP is the third most claimed benefit from the DWP, after the State Pension and Universal Credit. It helps 3.4 million people with extra costs due to long-term mental or physical health problems or disabilities.

The most common claim, made by 1.3 million individuals, is for psychiatric disorders. These include anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, learning disabilities, autism and dementia.

In June and July, PIP claimants and those receiving eight other disability benefits saw a £150 cost of living increase. However, many criticised this amount as not enough. Some suggest that disabled people should receive the same £900 package given to those on income-based benefits, who are getting the last instalment of £299 this month.

The DWP has promised: “We will continue to support vulnerable people with the cost of living from April this year.” They’ve confirmed a 6.7% increase for PIP starting 8 April 2024, and you’ll see more money in your account after the first four-week pay period.

Starting in April 2024, PIP is going up. The standard amount for daily living will be £72.65 weekly, and the higher amount for getting around will be £75.75 weekly. Remember, PIP is paid every four weeks, so sometimes you might get two payments in one month. Here’s the new amounts you could get:

The smallest amount you can get every four weeks will go up by £18.20 to £290.60. The most you can get will rise by £46.20 to £737.20 every four weeks.
