Mauricio Pochettino insists that Cole Palmer “doesn’t care” about the pressure of facing Manchester City as he offered his latest Chelsea injury update.

Palmer, 21, will return to face his former club at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday for the first time since joining Chelsea in a £42.5million move in the summer.

In November, he scored a last-minute penalty in a dramatic 4-4 draw against Man City at Stamford Bridge.

Asked whether Palmer might feel the pressure of playing away in Manchester this weekend, Pochettino said: “He is very smart. It is hard to find a word in English from Spanish; he is smart, intelligent and cheeky.

“He is emotionally intelligent. He doesn’t care [about the pressure of playing at City]. He will play well or not well but not because of the pressure.

“He is from Manchester but he looks like he is Brazilian and Argentinian in his capacity to adapt so quick. One of our strengths as Argentinians is to adapt so quick.

“Maybe sometimes people from north to south struggle to adapt but that’s the key – he adapted to life here in Cobham, around south London and the club.”

Pochettino confirmed that both Thiago Silva and Carney Chukwuemeka are out of Chelsea’s clash with City.

“[Silva] is out for tomorrow with a minor injury,” he said. “After tomorrow, we need to assess him day by day. Robert Sanchez is available, which is good news.

“Carney Chukwuemeka twisted his ankle two days ago and is out.”

Asked whether the fit-again Sanchez will take in-form Djordje Petrovic’s spot in goal at the Etihad, Pochettino said: “Always it is good to recover a player but you will see [if he starts].

“Always good he is back, you never know what can happen, so it is always good to have them available.”
