Oatmeal is an excellent source of fibre and contains numerous vitamins and minerals. Adding oatmeal into the diet may cause weight gain if it is made using full cream milk or large amounts of high kilojoule foods such as chocolate, sugar or nut butters are added. Oatmeal is an excellent way to add fibre and variety to your diet. If weight maintenance or weight loss is your goal, try making oatmeal with skim milk or water and adding fresh fruit for flavour.

Weight gain due to oatmeal consumption will only be possible if caloric adjustment is made, that is, in amounts greater than those on an isocaloric diet. Oatmeal is an excellent food for both those who desire to reduce and for those who want to gain weight. The individualized dose is what will achieve the desired goal.

Even being a source of carbohydrate, consumption does not contribute to weight gain. On the contrary, those who include oats in their diet can have more satiety and even lose weight. That’s because the cereal has a low glycemic index, or has the carbohydrate that is gradually absorbed by the body.
