Don’t bother drawing cash out if you’re heading to an Asda petrol station anytime soon.

The supermarket has announced it is now going fully cashless at 82 more of its UK stores.

Asda already axed tills at 14 stations, announcing the move in December, but now they say a further 68 will go cashless by the summer.

This is on top of the 150 stores forecourts that are already unmanned.

It means drivers will no longer have the option to pay for fuel at forecourt kiosks, manned by members of staff, and will instead have to ‘pay at pump’.

Customers will need a credit or debit card, or be able to pay via their phone, in order to fill up.

Staff that currently man the petrol stations will be relocated into stores, so that they can ‘better serve our customers’, according to a spokesperson.

However some drivers are worried about the change due to the ‘ringfenced cash’ system.

When you pay at pump, you do so before filling up. Asda – like other supermarket petrol stations – ringfences a set amount of money in a pre-authorisation check, before the actual charge is applied based on how much you’ve put in your tank.

The idea is that it stops people driving off before paying.

But this ringfenced amount is £99 at Asda, and some motorists have complained that there is a delay after paying, meaning they can’t access their ringfenced sum – and are temporarily out of pocket.

X (formerly Twitter) user Paul, took to the social media site to ask where his money was. ‘What’s the best way to resolve an issue were the £99 fuel charge is still being withheld after a week?’ he asked. ‘The petrol charge has been taken already but the £99 is still being held.’

For many though, the new cashless system will mean a quicker and easier way to fill up their car.

Asda isn’t the only store bringing your weekly shop into the future.

Aldi already has a check-out free supermarket in Greenwich, London, but earlier this month they made the shopping experience even quicker, but allowing customers to simply tap in and out of the shop with a phone or card, rather than having to download their Shop&Go app to enter.
