gio reyna to nottingham forest transfer latest - borussia dortmund stance and what we know so far

Gio Reyna in action for Borussia Dortmund

Nottingham Forest will be looking to get a deal for Borussia Dortmund’s Gio Reyna over the line before the January transfer window slams shut on Thursday night.

Forest are understood to have reached an agreement for the US international amid interest from Marseille, Sevilla and two other unnamed clubs. The 21-year-old has been restricted to regular game time this season after returning from injury.

The Reds are keen to offer Reyna a lifeline by signing him on a loan basis, which will include the option of a permanent transfer. Dortmund are said to have put a €15million price tag on the midfielder, and with the transfer in mind, NottinghamshireLive takes a look at the latest surrounding Reyna.

What we know so far

News that Forest had initiated talks with Borussia Dortmund over Reyna came out last week. The Athletic broke the news that the two clubs had initiated “talks” over a loan deal until the end of the season.

Elsewhere, ESPN claims that the two parties have reached an agreement to sign the American on loan, which will include the option of a permanent transfer. However, Marseille and two unnamed clubs are also said to be in the race for his signature.

The report adds that the aforementioned clubs have reached a similar agreement with Dortmund. Sevilla are also mentioned as trying to win the race for his signature.

Borussia Dortmund’s stance

The 21-year-old missed the first four games of the season after fracturing his fibula. Since October, Reyna has made 11 league appearances, playing a total of 270 minutes.

Sporting director Sebastian Kehl recently called on Reyna to put his poor run of form and fitness behind him. “Gio had a difficult time and was often injured,” he told Sky Sports Germany.

“It’s not easy because of the line-up we have in the centre. I can understand that he may be dissatisfied at the moment. But it’s also important for him to step on the gas.”

BVB head coach Edin Terzic has also said that Reyna remains available for selection. He said: “Gio is fit and healthy, and therefore an option for the starting eleven with the absences we have.

“Gio hasn’t approached me and expressed a desire to leave. Therefore, it is not an issue for me at the moment.”

Reyna’s view

It has been widely reported that the American is determined to leave the club due to his lack of playing time. His agent, Jorge Mendes, and his father, Claudio Reyna, are understood to be trying to find the best move possible.

US coach Gregg Berhalter has also spoken about the lack of Reyna’s game time. He told the Washington Post: “Any professional who’s competitive wants to be on the field. This is a case where Gio hasn’t been getting the game time that he wants and potentially [is] looking for alternate options, and that’s completely understandable.”
