It was announced on Wednesday that NBA champion Marc Gasol has retired from basketball. Gasol played 13 years in the NBA, making three All-Star teams with the Memphis Grizzlies, and winning an NBA championship with the Toronto Raptors. Gasol lasted played in the NBA for the Los Angeles Lakers in 2021.
It was announced by Shams Charania of The Athletic that the Grizzlies plan to retire Gasol’s No. 33 jersey:
During his 11 seasons with the Grizzlies, Gasol made three All-Star teams, two All-NBA teams, and won Defensive Player of the Year in 2013. While it was emotional for Gasol and Memphis to part ways, it led to him becoming an integral piece to Toronto’s first NBA championship in 2019.
One of the most consistent players of the 2010s, Gasol anchored some very good Grizzles teams. That “grit and grind” era of Grizzlies basketball is very beloved by their fanbase, and even basketball fans outside of Memphis have a level of appreciation for those teams.
Accomplishing a lot in his NBA career, Gasol walks away from basketball with a significant legacy, having made a large impact on two different franchises. In Memphis, Gasol will always be a multi-time All-Star who helped define an era of Grizzles basketball. In Toronto, he will always be an NBA champion who helped bring the Raptors their first title.
