After Uttarakhand, Rajasthan will table UCC Bill, say ministers

After Uttarakhand, another BJP-ruled state is now planning to introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) with Rajasthan’s ministers indicating that the UCC Bill will be tabled in the next Assembly session after the Lok Sabha polls.

Talking to journalists on Tuesday, School Education Minister Madan Dilawar said, “If not today, then tomorrow, but we will bring it. When we will bring it, I cannot say. There should be a uniform law for everyone. Different laws for people damage the people and the unity is not visible. The entire country should be united.”

Dilawar also mentioned the UCC in a letter Tuesday to Gujarat activist Tanzeem Merani, who was sitting on a protest in Jaipur calling for a hijab ban in schools. In the letter, Dilawar said that “the subject of setting up a Draft Committee for UCC will soon be kept in a cabinet meeting and further action will be taken as per the constitutional processes.”

Cabinet minister for Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) Kanhaiya Lal said, “We will discuss it with the CM and it is my wish too. It will 100 per cent be passed and implemented via the state Assembly and it will be implemented not just in Rajasthan but the entire country. We will try to be the second state (to pass UCC).” He said that while there may not be enough time in the present session, the government will bring it in the next “June-July” session.

The Uttarakhand Assembly had tabled the UCC Bill on Tuesday. While exempting the Scheduled Tribes from its purview, the bill proposes a common law on marriage, divorce, inheritance of property and live-in relationships for all citizens, irrespective of their religion.
