'Attempts Being Made To Hush Up Haveri Incident': Bommai Slams Govt, Demands Statement From CM Siddaramaiah

Former Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Sunday alleged that attempts were being made to hush up the moral policing incident of Haveri in which the accused have been charged with gangrape by the police, by offering money to the vicitm.

Bommai’s statement came in the backdrop of a viral video where six people barged into a hotel room and assaulted an inter-faith couple during their stay at Haveri district’s Hangal Taluk on January 8. Following the incident, two accsued have been arrested.

In his statement, Bommai claimed that Haveri police offered money to the vitim to close the incident.

“The government must constitute a Special Investigation Team to probe this incident. As Chief Minister Siddaramaiah would visit Haveri on Monday, the BJP expects him to make an announcement in this regard,” he said, reported PTI.

The Bharatiya Janata Party leader also said that the victim was taken to Sirsi, under the garb of investigation after the local police got information about the visit of the BJP women’s delegation to Haveri.

“The Congress party had been doing this kind of politics. What more can be expected from them,” he remarked.

As per the 26-year old survivor, belonging to a minority community, the incident took place on January 8 at 1 pm when she checked into a hotel room with a KSRTC driver aged 40, reported PTI, quoting police as saying.

The two had been in a relationship for the past three years, they added.

On the basis of a complaint by the woman, the police added charges of gang rape. The victim also deposed before the magistrate.

The woman has also said that people close to the accused are pressuring her to withdraw the case, offering her lakhs of rupees, as per the PTI report.
