Chiefs, NFL, Mahomes family make significant donations after KC parade rally shooting

The Kansas City Chiefs — in conjunction with the NFL — have made a significant donation to a new initiative in the wake of Wednesday’s parade rally mass shooting.

The Chiefs announced Friday that they, the Hunt Family Foundation and NFL have made a combined $200,000 donation to the #KCStrong Fund, a new endeavor created by the Chiefs and United Way Greater Kansas City.

In addition, the new fund-raising site showed Friday that Patrick and Brittany Mahomes — along with their “15 & the Mahomies Foundation” — also donated $50,000.

Specifically, the emergency response fund plans to support:

• Victims and their families

• Gun violence prevention programs, including mental health services

• First responders

“This moment is an opportunity to turn our collective outrage into action,” Chris Rosson, president and CEO of the United Way of Greater Kansas City, said in a news release.

Rosson said 100% of funds will go directly to the causes and organizations, with no administrative fees taken out.

As of Friday night, the United Way site had raised more than $440,000 for the cause.

In addition, the Chiefs revealed Friday they are selling $25.99 “Kansas City Strong” T-shirts, with the charitable money from the purchases going toward the same #KCStrong fund.

The Chiefs/NFL joint contribution continues a wave of support for victims following Wednesday’s events. Earlier Friday, singer Taylor Swift — the girlfriend of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce — donated $100,000 on a GoFundMe page to the family of Lisa Lopez-Galvan, who was killed in Wednesday’s shooting.
