Bafana Bafana can be proud of their efforts at AFCOn after an impressive run to the semi-finals. Here are three huge wins for South African football.
RUMOUR: Namibian AFCON star ‘dreams’ of playing for Kaizer Chiefs
A REINVIGORATED INTEREST IN BAFANA BAFANA
Ask anybody you know and they’ll say they’ve noticed a definite uptick in the support for South Africa’s football side. A large part of that is down to the players and the coaching staff, of course. Credit must also go to the insanely patriotic and sports-loving South Africans who are never shy to back their boys on the global stage. There have indeed been phases of disillusionment with the state of South African football, but it feels as though the tide might be turning. We are here for it.

RENEWED BELIEF AND CONFIDENCE
For too long, Bafana has suffered from an inferiority complex. This run to the semi-final was the first time South Africa has reached the final four of AFCON in 24 years. The ultimate glory in 1996 was followed by defeat in the 1998 final and a semi-final appearance in 2000. Since then, it’s been a barren patch of poor results and non-qualification. Now, we can tackle the challenges of 2026 World Cup qualifying with relish. Why should this team fear anybody on the African continent?

R47M IN THE BANK
Money isn’t everything, but it certainly helps. A R47 million windfall is a massive bonus for Bafana Bafana after their exploits in Côte d’Ivoire. It’s also a reminder of the enormity of their achievement and that bigger dreams lie immediately on the horizon. World Cup qualification is now a realistic goal and not a fanciful notion. And beyond that? Who knows, but hope springs eternal.
