Crystal Palace are ready to hijack Nottingham Forest’s proposed move for Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar, according to reports.

Steve Cooper’s Forest have agreed personal terms with the 24-year-old, but are currently not meeting Lyon’s €15million valuation of the player. As per L’Equipe, Palace have now expressed an interest in Aouar and are ready to make an offer for the Frenchman, who has one year left on his contract.

Earlier this week, it was claimed Aouar had a “provisional contract agreement” in place with Forest. French outlet RMC reported that “a total agreement” has been reached between Cooper’s side, the player and his representatives over a move to The City Ground.

However, The Reds have already seen two bids rejected for Aouar and could face a battle with Palace for his signature. Leicester City and Real Betis have also been linked with the player, while Arsenal have previously been credited with an interest, and were tipped with a £55m move for him in 2020.

Aouar impressed in Lyon’s Champions League quarter-final against Manchester City in 2020 before producing an excellent performance as they fell to defeat by Bayern Munich. Aouar came up through the ranks at Lyon, making his first-team debut in a 4-1 Europa League victory over AZ Alkmaar in 2017.

Since then, he has racked up more than 200 appearances for the club, scoring 40 goals. He has also represented France at various age groups and featured for the senior side two years ago.

Forest have made several attempts to land Aouar. It is claimed that at this moment the Reds are around £4m away from obtaining the player who has collected one cap for the France national team during his career.

Steve Cooper is keen to add another No.10 to his squad. Several players have been linked with a move to Nottingham, with Morgan Gibbs-White considered one of the club’s top targets before the window closes. But Wolves are keen to keep him and have put a £40m price tag on the midfielder.

Meanwhile, Palace are hoping to bolster their midfield and Aouar could perfectly slot into the side alongside Cheick Doucoure, who joined the south London club from Lens earlier in the summer. Will Hughes and Jeffrey Schlupp have both played in that role at the start of the season, but Aouar would add extra quality to the midfield given the experience he has gained.
