Jamiroquai's 'Dynamite' bassist dies in car crash

Derrick McIntyre has worked with Cliff Richard, Beverly Knight and Jamiroquai

A “phenomenal” bass player who worked with major artists, including Jamiroquai on his hit Dynamite album, has died in a five-car crash.

Hertfordshire police said Derrick McIntyre, 66, was pronounced dead at the scene in Bushey on 2 February.

The Watford resident had also played on albums with artists such as Emeli Sandé, Will Young and Beverly Knight.

In a tribute posted online his family described the grandfather as a “phenomenal bass player”.

It added that his loss will “be felt in and around the music world”.

Police said they were called at 07:38 GMT to a collision on the A41 North Western Avenue involving five vehicles.

They included Mr McIntyre’s bronze Vauxhall Astra, a silver Honda Jazz, a silver Chevrolet Orlando, a blue Ford Focus and a white Mercedes GLC.

Two people were also taken to hospital for further treatment.

Officers are working to establish the full circumstances of the incident and have requested those with information to come forward.

The bassist had also toured with big names such as Roy Myers, a US funk, soul, and jazz composer, and British stars Mica Paris and Cliff Richard.

His family added in a statement: “Dad was a great man who influenced many that came into contact with him, inspiring and encouraging every chance he could.

“He had a passion for music, playing the bass guitar for most of his life and blessing tracks with his groovy bassline for folks such as Jamiroquai, Roy Ayers, Beverley Knight and many more.”
