How to enable Microsoft Copilot on Windows 10

Microsoft’s Copilot is a ChatGPT-like AI-powered assistant backed by OpenAI’s GPT-4 large language model. It can be used to search for information on the internet, change system settings and understand a webpage’s context.

The tech giant has already rolled out the AI chatbot to a majority of Windows 11 users and announced that the feature will soon be available on Windows 10 machines, but it is currently not enabled for everyone.

Which Windows 10 machines are eligible for Copilot?

According to Microsoft, Copilot is only limited to Windows 10 Home and Pro editions that are not managed by organisations, Moreover, Enterprise and Education editions of the operating systems are not supported as of now.

The Redmond-based tech giants also said that Copilot has some hardware limitations, with the AI chatbot only appearing on PCs with at least 4GB RAM and a screen with 720p resolution.

One thing to note here is that Microsoft seems to be randomly enabling the feature for those on Windows 10 build 19045.3754 or newer, so even if you have two PCs with the same hardware and software, you may not get Copilot on both machines.

How to enable Copilot on Windows 10

While Copilot is not officially available for everyone, there’s a workaround that involves tinkering with some advanced settings if you want to get the ChatGPT-like AI chatbot on Microsoft’s older operating system. Here’s how to get Copilot on Windows 10.

1. Once you boot and log in to Windows 10, open the ‘Settings’ app and head over to ‘Update and Security’.

2. Navigate to the ‘Windows Update’ section and click on the ‘Windows Insider Program’ that appears on the left panel of the app.

3. Click on the ‘Get Started’ button on the screen that appears and enroll your machine in the ‘Release Preview’ channel in the Windows Insider Program.

4. Once done, head over to the ‘Windows Update’ section under ‘Update & Security’ and enable the ‘Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available’ option.

5. Now, press the ‘Check for updates’ button and install the KB5032278 update and reboot your system.

If the feature is available on your machine, a new ‘Copilot’ button will appear on your Windows 10 taskbar when you log in to your account. Since the feature is currently in the early stages, some commands might not work right now.
