The gift Australia is giving to Queen Mary and King Frederik X of Denmark to celebrate their accession to the throne has been revealed.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will donate $10,000 to Wildcare Tasmania to support the conservation of the endangered Tasmanian devils on behalf of the Australian people.

Albanese said it was a fitting gift for the Danish queen who was born and grew up in Tasmania.

‘The story of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark is one Australians have followed closely and hold dear to their hearts,’ he said.

‘Australia and Denmark’s close ties go beyond this union, with our nations sharing a commitment to democratic values, human rights, action on climate change and liberal trade.’

Albanese finished his statement by wishing King Frederik and Queen Consort Mary ‘the very best’.

Wildcare Tasmania funds a number of projects to protect and manage wild Tasmanian devil populations.

The organisation runs captive breeding and release programs and conducts research in disease prevention as a deadly facial tumour disease continues to have a devastating effect on the marsupials’ population.

CEO of Wildcare Tasmania, Jill Maxwell said she was honoured by the Prime Minister’s gift and the contribution will help continue the work of saving the Tasmanian devil population and species.

‘As a local myself, I always feel a sense of pride at seeing Tasmanians succeed and make an impact, whether at home or around the world,’ she said.

‘At a global level, the Tasmanian devil really is representative of our magnificent wilderness and wildlife. What a wonderful way to celebrate Queen Mary and the coronation, by contributing to help us save our tenacious marsupial that is so synonymous with our state.’

This isn’t the time the Australian government has honoured a new monarch with a donation.

For King Charles III’s coronation, the Australian government put $10,000 towards the conservation efforts of the western ground parrot (WGP).

Also known as the ‘Kyloring’ by the Noongar people, it is one of the rarest parrots in the world with a population of less than 150.

The endangered birds are only found in a concentrated area of a Western Australian national park, with the final few birds almost wiped out by bushfires in recent years.

The national contribution was made on behalf of the Australian people to Friends of the Western Ground Parrot (FWGP), a charity working to save the parrot.
