Ashbourne

If you’re looking for stunning nature, and a breath of history, but still want to enjoy a hearty pub meal at the end of the day, look no further than Ashbourne.

With a population of around 9,001, this peaceful yet charismatic town in Derbyshire is home to beautiful architecture, independent stores, lovely cafés and pubs, while also being the gateway to the Peak District.

Ashbourne is steeped in history, with some of its sights dating back to the 1200s.

You can take a leisurely walk around the centre and admire magnificent buildings like the St Oswald’s Church and its towering spire or alms houses.

The beautiful destination was also granted a charter for a market back in 1257 and the cobbled town centre still holds the market twice a week nowadays.

As you’re strolling through the narrow streets of Ashbourne, another architectural jewel not to be missed is the splendid facade of the Grade I listed Old Grammar School.

The town walls also hide the “longest inn sign in the world” outside The Greenman pub and restaurant.

Apart from offering plenty to feast your eyes on, Ashbourne also has some fascinating food history.

The original recipe for Ashbourne Gingerbread was acquired from the personal chef of a captured French general, who was kept in the town during the Napoleonic wars (1799-1815).

You can get your hands on this delicious treat at the Gingerbread Shop, now a Birds Bakery.

The vibrant town is dotted with many more independent shops and charming sites waiting to be discovered.

You can browse for antiques, designer fashion and much more. After your shopping spree, the centre will invite you to enjoy some lovely tea in a selection of cafés, inns and tea rooms.

While Ashbourne itself has plenty to offer to visitors, the picturesque town is just a stone’s throw from the stunning Peak District.

Situated on the southern edge of the Peak District National Park, Ashbourne is the perfect base if you want to explore the limestone landscapes of the southern White Peak.

The town is very close to the stunning area of Dovedale and the quaint village of Ilam.

Outdoor enthusiasts will be pleased by the fact that the Tissington Trail starts on the northern edge of Ashbourne.

Once a railway line, the 13-mile-long trail is hugely popular with walkers, cyclists and horse riders who want to enjoy some of the most spectacular White Peak countryside along the way.
