AEW World Champion Samoa Joe Comments on PlayStation vs. Xbox Console Wars
- Samoa Joe doesn’t understand why people argue over Xbox vs. PlayStation, likening it to the feud between Blockbuster and Hollywood Video.
- Microsoft has tried to bridge the gap between competitors Nintendo and Sony by wanting to bring Xbox Game Pass to other platforms.
- Xbox has claimed to no longer be interested in console wars, with Xbox head Phil Spencer emphasizing the focus on providing a quality service through the Xbox Game Pass.
It seems that AEW World Champion Samoa Joe is not a fan of the PlayStation vs. Xbox console wars. While most people know Samoa Joe as one of the AEW’s top wrestlers, he is also a huge gaming fan. Samoa Joe has dabbled in the gaming industry not only as a fan but as a talent. His most recent work to date involves voicing The Suicide Squad’s King Shark in the upcoming video game.
Console wars have existed for quite a long time. However, most recent generations have matched up Microsoft’s Xbox against Sony’s PlayStation because of how close their specs are. From its first direct clash involving the Xbox versus the PlayStation 2, up to now with the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X/S, this rivalry has been a hot topic for many gamers. And while some reports and studies say Xbox is more popular than PlayStation in the US, others claim that Sony’s machine is doing better in other markets.

AEW World Champion Samoa Joe gave his honest opinion regarding this matter by stating that he just “sits back and shakes his head” at the people trying to pick sides. To finish the tweet, the AEW star jokingly compared the PlayStation and Xbox rivalry to the Blockbuster and Hollywood Video one, implying that that feud ended with both brands eventually disappearing. One fan replied to the tweet with a video clip of Samoa Joe’s appearance on the NotSam Wrestling Podcast wherein he questioned why many fans have blind loyalty to a specific console. In the same clip, Samoa Joe also stated that he owned all the gaming systems available, showing how much he loved the industry as a whole.
Granted, Microsoft has at least tried to build bridges between its competitors, Nintendo and Sony. A recent report mentioned that Microsoft wanted to bring Xbox Game Pass to platforms like Switch and PlayStation. While it may seem like an unorthodox idea, if it happens, then it’s possible that Microsoft could help end the console wars as fans know.
It might also be of note that Xbox is not interested in the console wars anymore. Xbox head Phil Spencer mentioned just as much during a previous podcast appearance that the team is not trying to out-console their rivals. It seems that Microsoft’s current focus is providing a quality service via the Xbox Game Pass. In a sense, console wars might be something that many fans are trying to spark, but some of the companies involved may be focused on other goals instead.
