Ángel Hernández is a household name among baseball fans for the wrong reasons, as the veteran umpire is known for his inconsistent-at-best calls. That was fully on display Friday night, when Hernández went viral, again, for his missed calls.
Hernández was behind the plate for the Texas Rangers-Houston Astros game, and as Texas was blowing out Houston 8–1, Hernández made a baffling strikeout call.
Rangers rookie outfielder Wyatt Langford was at the plate when Astros pitcher JP France threw him three pitches off the plate. However, Hernández called all three pitches strikes despite none of them ending up in the strike zone.
That is now the second time Hernández has gone viral for a missed call this year, as he felt the wrath of Yankee Stadium last week after incorrectly calling Gleyber Torres out on strikes.
With the addition of the strike zone box to MLB broadcasts, it is easier to see when MLB umpires make the right calls compared to when they mess up. However, fans didn’t need the box to see Hernández made the wrong calls on Friday.
