iOS 18 will be one of the ‘biggest updates’ in Apple’s history, says report
Apple’s recent decision to allow third-party apps, browsers, and payment gateways on iPhones marks a significant shift in the company’s long-term strategy, driven by the need to comply with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). According to a report by Bloomberg, Apple could adopt this new strategy globally, possibly starting with the iOS 18 update.
The latest on iOS 18 from the Q&A section of Power On: I’m told that the new operating system is seen within the company as one of the biggest iOS updates — if not the biggest — in the company’s history. Stay tuned for more. https://t.co/w2Lt7itezV

The company is introducing all these features with the iOS 17.4 update for iPhones, explicitly stating that these features will be exclusive to the European region initially. Cupertino is expected to offer at least some of these features worldwide by the end of 2024 with the iOS 18 update.
Apple will officially showcase iOS 18 at WWDC 2024 in June, featuring many first-on-iPhone-like features, some of which could be backed by artificial intelligence, potentially removing some of these limitations. iOS 18 could introduce native ChatGPT-like capabilities on iPhones, with the upcoming iPhone 16 series expected to offer these new features built on top of an in-house large language model. Some of these features might run on-device, utilizing the next-generation chip. However, a new report by 9to5Mac suggests that Apple could build these AI experiences on top of OpenAI’s GPT.
Prominent upcoming AI features on the iPhone could include content summarisation using Siri, auto-generated playlists on Apple Music, an AI-powered notes app for quick content generation, and an enhanced photo editor powered by generative AI, similar to the latest smartphones from Google and Samsung.
Moreover, with iOS 18, Apple will also incorporate RCS messaging to enable the same rich texting experience, similar to iMessage, even when texting with Android users. However, the message bubble will continue to remain green. Besides iOS 18, Apple will also showcase iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, and macOS 15 at WWDC 2024, all of which are expected to offer new features and capabilities.
