After rents in New York reached record highs last year, residents likely expect to forgo a few luxuries in their next apartment.

But it appears most draw the line at living without a bathroom. A tiny $2,000-per-month ‘micro apartment’ in the Big Apple has gone viral on TikTok as it features just a sink, fridge and small closet space – without its own toilet or shower.

Instead, a bathroom can be found outside the studio and down the hallway of the building.

TikTok user Omer Labock drew attention to the find on his profile, attracting over 17,000 likes and nearly 1,000 comments.

He explained in the clip: ‘This is a micro apartment in New York City. And yes, the entire space you are seeing is the full apartment.

‘You have this one big window that lets in natural lighting and that is pretty much it along with this kitchenette. Basically it’s just a sink and a fridge and a small closet space.

‘And there is no bathroom in the unit. The bathroom is actually outside in the hallway. Not just the bathroom but also the shower which is behind me.’

He added: ‘And this apartment is renting for just under $2,000 per month.’

The post did not specify where exactly in New York the flat was located. Nevertheless viewers were left bemused by the high price tag.

The video comes after a study by RentCafe laid bare just how much more New Yorkers have to pay in rent compared to residents in other areas of the world.

The average national monthly rent of $1,700 would get somebody just a 211-square-foot apartment in one Manhattan Zipcode.

By comparison, the same sum could buy a renter a 1,996-square-foot place in Memphis – almost ten times bigger.

Last year, it was revealed that a one-room apartment located just steps away from Central Park was sold for $3.88 million in an all-cash deal.

The 691-foot apartment was the most expensive studio to sell in the city in 2023, according to real estate appraiser Jonathan Miller. It worked out as $5,615 per square-foot.

The typical national monthly rent of $1,700 will allow you to lease a 1,996 square-feet apartment in one Memphis zip code, but only 211 square feet in a Manhattan neighborhood

The property – which was developed by luxury real estate firm SHVO – is fully furnished and is complete with a 167-square-foot private terrace, access to the rooftop pool and cabanas. It sits on the 15th floor of Mandarin Oriental Residences at 685 Fifth Ave.

There is also a private restaurant run by Michelin starred chef Daniel Boulud in the building, an in-residence sommelier service, spa with steam room and fitness center, according to its online listing.

The room itself comes with La Bottega bath sets, Georg Jensen home accessories and even a Dyson hairdryer, worth around $430.
