New Jersey to host 2026 FIFA World Cup final
NEW DELHI: The 2026 World Cup final will take place at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey, according to an announcement from FIFA on Sunday. The decision came after a competitive bid process, with New York beating out Dallas to host the final on July 19. The 48-team tournament will be jointly hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
The tournament will kick off with the opening game at Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium on June 11. Atlanta and Dallas have been chosen to host the semi-finals, while Miami will be the venue for the third-place game.
MetLife Stadium, located in East Rutherford, New Jersey, has a seating capacity of 82,500 and serves as the home stadium for the NFL’s New York Giants and New York Jets. It has previously hosted major international football events, including the final of the 2016 Copa America tournament.
The New York bid highlighted the city’s experience in hosting major international events and its status as a global city with excellent transportation connections for fans. Dallas, with AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, home to the Dallas Cowboys, presented a strong case, particularly with the venue’s roof providing protection from the elements.
The Azteca Stadium in Mexico City will make history by becoming the first stadium to host World Cup tournament games in three separate editions, having previously hosted in 1970 and 1986.
The United States will commence its group stage campaign at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on June 12, with additional matches scheduled in Seattle. Toronto will host the first game for the Canadian team, and Vancouver is another Canadian venue for hosting the team.
