4 upcoming Apple iPhone 16 updates we are most excited about

Apple’s iPhone 15 series is still fresh on the market, but rumors about the next generation of iPhones are already swirling. The iPhone 16 series is expected to be released next year, and it is rumored to include some major upgrades. These include larger displays, improved cameras, a shift to solid-state buttons, and more.

Based on the recent leaks and rumors, here are the top 4 upgrades that are expected to stand out in the upcoming new Apple smartphones (likely the iPhone 16 series).

Design

Apple is reportedly set to introduce a stacked design in the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro models, aiming to enhance light capture capabilities and expand the dynamic range, potentially enhancing Night Mode performance. This design change is expected to bring about a slight increase in the thickness of the iPhone 16 Pro models.

In addition to the stacked design, the display sizes of both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are expected to increase, with the former sporting a 6.3-inch display and the latter boasting a 6.9-inch display. Consequently, the dimensions of both models will grow, making them taller and wider than their predecessors, the iPhone 15 Pro models.

To address overheating concerns, Apple is also rumoured to incorporate a graphene thermal system into the iPhone 16 models. Additionally, the iPhone 16 Pro models may incorporate a metal battery casing for improved heat dissipation.

Meanwhile, reports suggest iPhone 16 may bring an extra capacitive button known as the “Capture Button,” positioned on the side with the Power button. It is being said that Apple is planning to relocate the mmWave cutout to accommodate this button, which can detect pressure and touch, providing haptic feedback. While the purpose of the Capture Button remains unknown, it adds a new element to the iPhone’s interface.

Display

In terms of display, the iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to sport larger displays than their predecessors. The iPhone 16 Pro is rumoured to have a 6.3-inch display, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max is expected to have a 6.9-inch display. On the contrary, the standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models are expected to maintain the same display sizes as their predecessors- which is a 6.7-inch display.

Apple is also reportedly working on a new display technology that could potentially replace blue fluorescent technology with blue phosphorescence to enhance power efficiency. However, it is unclear if this technology will be ready for inclusion in the iPhone 16.

Camera

For photos and videos the iPhone 16 Pro is expected to adopt the same 5x zoom tetraprism camera that is currently exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. In addition to the new telephoto camera, the iPhone 16 Pro is also rumored to use a new Sony sensor for the Main camera. While the details on this sensor are still unclear, it is expected to provide significant improvements in low-light photography.

The iPhone 16 Pro Max is also rumoured to take optical zoom capabilities even further with a new “periscope ultra-long telephoto camera.” This technology could allow for even greater zoom range, making it possible to capture distant subjects with exceptional detail.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are both rumoured to receive a significant upgrade to their ultra-wide cameras. The current 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera is expected to be replaced with a 48-megapixel sensor, which should dramatically improve low-light performance and overall image quality.

In addition to the specific camera upgrades mentioned above, the iPhone 16 lineup is also expected to benefit from overall improvements in camera software and computational photography. These enhancements could lead to better image quality, improved low-light performance, and more advanced features like Portrait Mode and Night Mode.

Battery

Under the hood Apple is reportedly set to make significant improvements to the battery life of the iPhone 16 Pro. The company is expected to introduce a new metal battery casing for the iPhone 16 Pro, which will offer better heat dissipation compared to the traditional foil casing used in previous models. This change could improve battery life, allow the iPhone 16 Pro to run at higher performance levels for longer periods of time, and address the overheating problems that have affected the iPhone 15 Pro.

In addition to the new metal battery casing, Apple is also rumored to be incorporating a graphene thermal system into the iPhone 16 Pro. Graphene is a material with exceptional thermal conductivity, which means that it can efficiently dissipate heat away from the battery. This could further improve battery life and prevent overheating.

Finally, there is a rumor that the iPhone 16 Pro will use a new stacked battery design. This design could allow for faster charging speeds, with wired charging potentially increasing to 40W and MagSafe charging potentially increasing to 20W. However, this rumor has not been corroborated, and it should be treated with skepticism.

Other than this Apple is reportedly deviating from its A17 Pro chip strategy for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. Instead of using the same A17 Pro chip featured in the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, Apple is opting for a more cost-effective N3E process for the standard “A17” chip. This new chip is reportedly in the developmental stage and is expected to be released in September 2024.

While these details are based on speculation and should be treated with caution pending the release date, the iPhone 16 series is poised to be a significant upgrade over the recently launched iPhone 15 series.
