Telugu star Ram Charan received an honorary doctorate from the Vels University in Chennai on Saturday.

The RRR star was the chief guest at the graduation ceremony where he was bestowed with the honour for his contribution as an actor, producer, entrepreneur and social activist in the field of arts and culture.

Speaking on the occasion, Charan thanked the University for the recognition and said that the award was a result of support from producers, directors, writers, audience and fans. “The reason we are here is because of them,” Ram Charan said, appreciating the services of the University.

‘Chennai, land of dreamers and opportunities’

Talking about what Chennai meant to him, the actor said, “Not just films and politics, but my wife Upasana’s firm Apollo, started by her grandfather, was also first started in Chennai. Eighty per cent of the Telugu film industry was started here. The city encouraged everyone with a dream. Chennai is a land of opportunities and land of dreamers. I was born here in Vijaya hospital in Chennai and my education was also here in Chennai. So the city is very special to me.”

‘Shanmugam Shankar, most celebrated director’

When asked about Shanmugam Shankar, the director of his upcoming film Game Changer, Charan described him as the “most celebrated director.” “It’s a dream for many actors to work with a director like Shankar. I am glad that I got the opportunity to collaborate with him on Game Changer. It’s a different story and the first time I am doing a political drama,” said Charan, hinting that the film may release around October.

Earlier, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and acclaimed director Shanmugam Shankar received similar honours from the University.

The news of Charan’s accolade has kicked off celebrations among his fans who have been eagerly waiting to see their favourite hero being felicitated.

Congratulatory messages have already started pouring in, and fans have already started celebrating the landmark achievement and are calling him ‘Dr Ram Charan.’

On the work front, Charan’s Game Changer is in the last leg of production. He will also commence shooting for another film under director Buchi Babu. The yet-to-be-titled film, which has Janhvi Kapoor as the leading lady and AR Rahman as the music composer, is a sports drama based in Uttarandhra. Interestingly, this is the first time the actor will be seen in such a genre.

Ram Charan made his debut with Chirutha in 2007. From then, he has won accolades for his performances in various films. He also won many awards including Nandi Awards, FilmFare, and was also nominated for the Critics’ Choice Awards in the Best Actor category for RRR.
