In a historic move, the Charles-de-Gaulle aircraft carrier will be deployed under NATO command for the first time, embarking on a mission in the Mediterranean aimed at demonstrating France’s commitment to the alliance, particularly in light of Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

The mission, named Akila, will bring together vessels from multiple countries, including the United States, Spain, Greece, Italy, and Portugal, according to Commander Jacques Mallard of the French carrier strike.

Scheduled to commence on April 22nd for a duration of two weeks, all components of the mission will operate under the oversight of Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO, headquartered in Oeiras, Portugal.

Vice Admiral Didier Maleterre, NATO’s maritime second-in-command, highlighted the significance of this deployment, stating that it marks the first time the Charles-de-Gaulle aircraft carrier and its escort, including a nuclear-powered attack submarine, will operate under NATO’s operational control for a vigilant mission, transcending the realm of mere exercises.

While French aircraft and vessels have previously operated under NATO command, the carrier, equipped with Rafale jets, has always remained under French authority. However, Maleterre noted that France retains the ability to reassume control of the operation if necessary.

Against the backdrop of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, France has strengthened its ties with the NATO alliance, and by entrusting its navy’s flagship to NATO command, it aims to underscore its commitment and engagement within the alliance.
