México didn’t get off to the best start, but roared back despite a physical match to down Argentina 6-1 at Estadio Gregorio “Tepa” Gómez in Tepatitlán, Jalisco. Stephany Mayor and Alison Gonzélez each had a brace, while María Sánchez had a goal and Joseline Montoya had a goal and two assists.

Flor Bonsegundo opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a hopeful shot from distance that Emily Alvarado simply whiffed on, the ball traveling through her arms into the back of the net.

A scary moment in the 25th minute when Jimena López went down hard from a rough tackle from Clarisa Huber. After some time down on the pitch and a visit from the medical staff, she was able to continue. A few minutes later Maricarmen Reyes slid hard into Agustina Barroso along the boards, however again there was no call from the referee. In the 32nd, María Sánchez made a nice run along the left, but the resulting shot went well wide of the mark. At the other end, Mariana Larroquette had a nice shot from the right side that looked promising, but it sailed just wide of the far post.

México’s fortunes would change in the 38th when on a corner kick Bonsegundopushed Alison González into 20, causing her to spill onto the turf. The referee immediately awarded the penalty, causing the Argentine squad to protest. While they were protesting, a shoving match broke out between the teams along the edge of the box, delaying the proceedings even further. Goalkeeper Solana Pereyra picked up a yellow card and Stephany Mayor converted toe penalty to draw the sides level in the 42nd minute.

Then less than a minute later María Sánchez made a great run down the left and crossed it into the mixer. It bounced around for what seemed like an eternity before Mayor banged it home to put México up 2-1.

México wasted no time in adding to the score in the second half. Just two minutes in, Joseline Montoya sent a nice cross into the box that Alison González knocked in. Then in the 50th minute Montoya sent another ball into the mixer that couldn’t get cleared out, and this time it was María Sánchez getting the shot, knocking one through traffic off of the far post to make it 4-1 to the hosts. Then in the 66th Montoya made a nice pass against the grain to spring González, who shot from distance past Pereyra to pile on the misery and make it 5-1 for México.

Immediately after Montoya had a good chance but her shot went just inches over the crossbar. She’d get her goal in the 84th when Solana Pereyra allowed the ball to slip through her fingers and Montoya walked it into the net to make it 6-1.

The even better news for México is that Myra Delgadillo and Anika Rodríguez got their debuts and are now cap tied to México. Santos Laguna captain Cinthya Peraza also got her first cap for México.
