Rishi Sunak's tax bill rises by more than £75,000 to more than £500,000 as PM publishes his personal financial details return for the second time - showing that he made £2.2million last year

Rishi Sunak paid more than half a million pounds in tax last year, his latest return revealed today.

The Prime Minister filed his personal income details late on Friday showing he paid some £508,308 in the 2022-2023 financial year.

This is up from £432,493 he paid the previous year – an increase of just over £75,000 and almost double the £227,350 he paid in 2019-20, before the pandemic.

The vast majority, some £359,250, was capital gains tax gains tax, which is paid on shares and other investments.

The PM, who is a millionaire, has an investment fund held in a blind trust, which made £1.8million, the document disclosed.

It means that before tax the PM earned £2.22million before tax last year, when his salary and other income is taken into account, with a tax rate of 23 per cent.
