English subtitles were rare in the 90s, but modern shows will hopefully be subtitled for an international viewership.

AfriForumTV is run by AfriForum, the South African civil rights group.

Afrikaans television shows: Afriforum TV

AfriForumTV is a video streaming service launched by civil rights group AfriForum.

The group has been criticised for their views, though often insists that they are promoting a language – and not a race or its exclusivity.

New episodes of old shows could give many Afrikaans actors their platform back.

Afrikaans: Vetkoek Paleis

Vetkoek Paleis is a classic South African television show.

It was created by actor and director Willie Esterhuizen.

He’s a veteran of SA television. Esterhuizen has also produced several movies, including Poena is Koning (‘Poena is King’).

It’s not everyone’s brand of comedy, but for some, it works.

Vetkoek Paleis continues the storyline where early seasons stopped. There’s a new storyline too: Worsie has a son.

Dedicated fans might love the results.

7de Laan: South Africa’s classic soapie

7de Laan was one of South Africa’s top-performing soapies.

It was also one of the country’s longest-running episodic stories, with thousands of episodes by the end.

SABC axed the favourite soapie in 2023.

The good news: fans can still watch episodes of their favourite show on YouTube.

You can see full episodes of 7de Laan on YouTube.
