uk faces 'disastrous' weather shift and 'we are entering unknown territory'

The Gulf Stream is one part of a phenomenon known as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC).

The UK has been issued a devastating and horrifying weather warning by meteorologists – if the Gulf Stream collapses. The Gulf Stream is one part of a phenomenon known as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC).

Speaking to the Daily Express, weather expert Jim Dale said the collapse of the AMOC would “turn the UK & Western Europe into a snowy freezer during winter”. He added: “The cause would be manmade climate change and the fallouts would be disastrous. In my opinion, we are entering unknown territory with most people’s eyes wide shut!

“Oceanographers & climatologists expect the AMOC to collapse over the next 50-75 or so years, but it’s undetermined and could happen very much sooner. It last occurred around 12,000 years ago during a mini ice age & recent signs are seen as not good.”

Speaking to the MailOnline, Professor David Thornalley said in a warning to UK households: “Unfortunately people would die due to stronger winter storms and flooding, and many old and young would be vulnerable to the very cold winter temperatures.

“Many millions would be affected and suffer from drought, famine and flooding, in countries that are already struggling to deal with these issues. There would be huge numbers of climate refugees and geopolitical tensions would rise.”

Head of Eart Systems Analysis at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Research Stefan Rahmstorf warned: “The new study adds significantly to the rising concern about an AMOC collapse in the not-too-distant future. We will ignore this at our peril.”

Speaking to MailOnline, experts revealed how Britain would be plunged into a deep freeze – with winter conditions up to 15C colder than usual. Jonathan Bamber, a professor of Earth observation at the University of Bristol, agreed that if the AMOC were to collapse, the climate of northwest Europe would be ‘unrecognisable compared to what it is today’.
