luis suarez makes retirement vow just weeks after ex-liverpool star linked up with lionel messi

Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi warm up on the pitch before the friendly exhibition match between Al-Hilal SFC and Inter Miami CF at the Kingdom Arena Stadium in Riyadh on January 29, 2024.

Former Liverpool star Luis Suarez has revealed his plans to retire at Inter Miami – just weeks after he was reunited with Lionel Messi at the Florida outfit.

Suarez hasn’t yet played his first game for the Major League Soccer club, having joined from Gremio recently. Despite not making it to the end-of-season playoffs, Inter Miami, owned by David Beckham, are gearing up for the 2024 season, with Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba also among their ranks.

Suarez shared his retirement plans on Uruguayan radio – via Diario AS – saying that while he’s ready for this last challenge, he’s also thinking about his life after football, and it looks like it won’t involve a crack at management. “I don’t want to do it; it’s worse than being a player,” he said about the idea of becoming a manager. “Because of the hours of work, it requires more time.”

Before Suarez joined the team in Miami, it was widely thought he would sign for one year with a chance to stay for another. But when the club announced he was joining, there was no mention of a second year.

“We are delighted to have a player of Luis’ quality and passion for the game join our club,” said president and co-owner Beckham. “He joins a squad that is inspiring the next generation and we look forward to seeing him take to the field with both former teammates and young players from our Academy.”

Suarez, who celebrated his 37th birthday in January, is aiming to score 11 more goals for his club to reach 500 career goals. He scored a massive 198 goals for Barcelona, including an amazing 59 goals in just 53 games in the 2015-16 season. He’s also played 138 times for Uruguay and was in the team when they were knocked out early in the 2022 World Cup.

He’s expected to play for his country again at the 2024 Copa America, where they will play against teams like the United States, Panama, and Bolivia. While at Liverpool, Suarez scored 82 goals in 133 matches across all competitions.
