The Linc – Two ideal draft picks for the Eagles

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links …

2024 NFL Draft: Ideal top two picks for every team – NFL.com

Round 1: No. 22 overall: Quinyon Mitchell, CB, Toledo. Round 2: No. 50 overall: Zak Zinter, OG, Michigan. GM Howie Roseman will likely have to make his fifth first-round trade in the last six years to get Mitchell after the corner excelled at the Senior Bowl and combine (4.33 40 and 20 bench reps at 195 pounds). He may lose the 50th pick in such a trade but would still have the 53rd selection. The Eagles took Landon Dickerson early in the second round in 2021 after he suffered an injury late in his final college season — like Zinter. The Michigan guard is a powerful and agile lineman who would step into a starting role as soon as he is able, assuming Cam Jurgens moves to center to replace Jason Kelce.

EDGE Josh Sweat: The Eagles dangled Sweat as trade bait before eventually getting him to take a pay cut. Sweat will likely want to explore the open market next offseason, and the Eagles feel unlikely to try to go out of their way to retain him, given their willingness to move on from him this offseason.

2024 NFL Draft: Day 3 fits for all 32 NFL teams – PFF

Philadelphia Eagles: LB JD Bertrand, Notre Dame. Solid in coverage and good against the run in 2023, Bertrand is an intriguing Day 3 prospect because of how he was used as a pass rusher over the past three seasons. He blitzed on 104 snaps in 2023, racking up 30 quarterback pressures, including four sacks and seven quarterback hits.

Top draft expert breaks down Eagles’ top-round combinations – NBCSP

“I think corner and then maybe work the offensive lineman,” Kiper said. “One other offensive lineman, Kingsley Suamataia, he could still be there. I discussed him in the early-, mid-second, he could be there in the late-second. There’s a wide range of opinion on him. He’s super talented, needs some coaching, needs some fine-tuning. He’s a guy you could look at as well. And you want that versatility that can wear various hats, guard, tackle. Maybe Cooper Beebe from Kansas State, who I gave to Baltimore, could be that type of player.”

NFL Draft Rankings 2024: Interior defensive line – BGN

1. Byron Murphy II, Texas. What he does well: Byron Murphy II is one of the more gifted athletes in this entire class. His physical gifts are most evident when he can get upfield as a pass rusher. He has a devastating first step and a fantastic motor to terrorize a passing game. He is a stout, strong player too who was relied on to play nose guard in Texas’ defense despite playing next to 360 pound T’Vondre Sweat. His low, powerful build helps him anchor against the run. Where he can Improve: It rarely shows up on tape, but Byron Murphy’s size is a legitimate concern for when he gets to the NFL. His short arms and lighter weight will force a learning curve against NFL offensive linemen. He has the athletic tools to compensate, but it might take some time to adjust. Pro Comparison: Grady Jarrett

Top receiver deals definitely aren’t what they seem to be – PFT

Keep these numbers in mind as the next wave of receivers jockey for their next contracts, from Justin Jefferson of the Vikings to Ja’Marr Chase of the Bengals to Tee Higgins of the Bengals (who is subject to the franchise tag) to Brandon Aiyuk of the 49ers and beyond. The simple reality is that no receiver is currently making even $24 million per year when the contract is valued from the moment the contract is signed. Will some receivers soon be making more than that? Jefferson and Chase absolutely should.

One argument against drafting a quarterback is the timeline of the Dallas Cowboys salary cap – Blogging The Boys

But beyond that, investing a premium resource in a quarterback now would also be failing to set up a situation that allows a proper capitalization of the new signal-caller. If we presume that we are talking about a second- or third-round pick, then we are talking about a quarterback with a four-year contract. The timeline of everything involved really matters here. As things stand Prescott’s cap charges for 2024 and 2025 are (rounding down here) $55M and $40M, respectively. One of the primary, if not the primary, benefits of having a quarterback on a rookie contract is the financial flexibility that it affords you to build around him, something the Cowboys failed to do properly when Prescott himself was on the books for fourth-round money.

Draft question of the day: Is there a ‘worst-case scenario’ at No. 6? – Big Blue View

Ed says: I don’t think there is a disaster scenario for the Giants. There certainly isn’t a ‘watch the two players you really wanted come off the board right in front of you and get stuck with Eli Apple’ scenario. If you consider J.J. McCarthy worthy of a pick in the top six, that makes eight players — four quarterbacks, three wide receivers and offensive tackle Joe Alt — who could viably be chosen in the top six. Now, depending on which quarterbacks and wide receivers are at the tippy-top of the Giants draft board there are scenarios they might like better than others. I don’t think, though, that there is a true “worst-case” scenario. Even if it falls such that three quarterbacks and two receivers go in the top five and the Giants aren’t thrilled with the choices they are left with at six, they can trade down. Someone will want Alt. Someone will be dying to have whichever quarterback is left. Someone would be ecstatic to get whoever ends up as WR3. No matter what, the Giants end up with one of the top quarterbacks, one of the top wide receivers or a nice haul of picks for trading down. Now, if you aren’t a McCarthy guy and the Giants end up with McCarthy at No. 6 you might call that “worst-case.” I would not.

Adam Schefter tells Commanders fans it is safe to buy their Jayden Daniels jersey – Hogs Haven

With the first round of the 2024 NFL draft just 13 days away, what better way to gain insight into the Washington Commanders’ decision on the number two overall pick than to have ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter share his thoughts on how things will go on the night of April 25th? Listen to the full interview with Adam Schefter below. We discuss: Why Schefter believes (still) the Commanders are locked in on LSU Tigers QB Jayden Daniels.

Johnny Newton is 2024 NFL Draft defensive tackle every team should want – SB Nation

Football is a cyclical sport. Ideas and concepts are rarely new, and as adjustments get made they force both offenses and defenses to change personnel and the body types they look for. As free agency began to unfold, it’s looking more and more like having good defensive tackle play is increasing in value. Offenses are leaning more into bigger bodies up front and more gap scheme run games, simply because many linebackers are now 210-pound former safeties in the box. If teams want to play like that defensively, having good tackles up front will become more important. As defensive tackles begin to get paid more and become more valuable, it lines up perfectly with the 2024 NFL Draft class, and who I believe is the best defensive player of the bunch: Illinois defensive tackle Johnny Newton. For the last two seasons, Newton has terrorized Big 10 offensive lines to the tune of 89 pressures, 13 sacks and 23 tackles for loss, and the Illini defense put up record numbers in 2022. Let’s dig into his game to figure out why he’s the best defensive player in the class.
