Andy Reid is 65 years old and on the cusp of his second consecutive Super Bowl and third in five seasons (with four appearances), which has led some to wonder aloud if Reid will ride away on top in the event of a Kansas City victory on Sunday night.
Reid sat with Bill Cowher for an interview during CBS’s pre-game show, where Cowher asked him about the speculation.
“You know, I get asked that. I’m good. I feel great. They say, it just hits you. Well, it hasn’t hit me,” Reid said.
“That’s the best answer I can give.”
Cowher and Reid are only a year apart in age, a fact easily obscured given that the former has been out of coaching nearly 20 years. Cowher led the Pittsburgh Steelers to a long-awaited Super Bowl victory in the 2005 season, came back for the title defense, and then left coaching for good after 2006. He was only 49 at the time, though he did spend 15 seasons as the Steelers head coach.
“I stepped out at 49 years old and, you know, it wasn’t that bad. I haven’t lost a game in 17 years,” Cowher said.
Assuming he comes back next season, the 2024 campaign will mark Reid’s 12th season in Kansas City and 26th as an NFL head coach. He is 258-144-1 in the regular season and 25-16 in the playoffs.
