Jasprit Bumrah didn’t do me any favors by bowling like a genius: Mark Wood ‘not annoyed’ by limited role in Hyderabad
England express pacer Mark Wood heaped praise on India fast-bowler Jasprit Bumrah’s performance in Hyderabad, saying he bowled like a genius. England beat India by 28 runs in a nail-biting finish at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
With this win, England took a 1-0 lead in the five-match Test series. Wood was used sparingly by skipper Ben Stokes with the 34-year-old bowling just 8 overs in the second innings.
Speaking to ESPNcricinfo after England’s win in Hyderabad, Wood said Bumrah didn’t do him any favors by bowling like a genius. Bumrah claimed 2 wickets in the first innings and 4 wickets in the second innings against England in the first Test.
“Bumrah didn’t do me any favours by bowling like a genius. I’m disappointed that I didn’t get any wickets but not really fussed, because the team played amazing,” said Wood.
IND vs END, 1st Test: Match report
He went on to say that he was not annoyed by his limited role in the first Test, insisting that he trusted Stokes’ calls as a captain. Wood failed to pick any wickets in Hyderabad, bowling 17 overs in the first innings and 8 overs in the second.
“When we were at the ground, Stokes said probably one or two. I thought I may not even open the bowling in the second innings. But it was like, ‘one over, that’s it’. Very rarely would you think you’d bowl one over and then be off,” said Wood.
“But weirdly, I trust what he says. One over? Right, okay, I’ll give it everything for this over. And then he said ‘rest’ and I’m not annoyed. Like, I get it, we’re going to spin now. So it’s just a bit different,” Wood added.
IND v ENG, 1st Test: Scorecard | Highlights
Chasing 231 runs, India’s batting order failed to turn up on Day 4 with the tail-enders putting up a fight late in the final session of the day. However, despite gritty partnerships, first between KS Bharat and Ravichandran Ashwin and then by Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, India were bundled for 202 runs, losing the first Test by 28 runs.
The two sides will now lock horns at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium at Vizag on February 2.
