Australia is PNG’s ‘big brother’: James Marape

Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister James Marape has described Australia as his country’s “big brother”.

Speaking with The Australian, he believes Australia is PNG’s main domestic securing partner.

He also believes his country relies on Australia’s help to fix its broken police force and stop international criminals from using the Pacific Island nation as a safe haven.

Mr Marape says he’s not trying to pin Australia against China for PNG’s own benefit.

He will become the first South Pacific leader to deliver an address to the federal parliament later today.
