Jay Williams is choosing an interesting hill to die on this Saturday morning.

While discussing Iowa superstar Caitlin Clark’s record-breaking collegiate career during a segment on ESPN’s College GameDay, Williams chose to admit that he’s ‘unwilling’ to say Clark is great – yet.

“She’s probably the most prolific scorer the game of basketball has ever seen,” Williams began. “I am unwilling – and maybe it’s more the Kobe mentorship around me – to say that she is great yet…

“I hold great – or the levels of immortality, or the pantheon – to when you win championships.”

Refusing to acknowledge Clark as ‘great’ is an interesting decision by Williams – and one that immediately drew criticism from his fellow co-hosts.

“She’s great. She is great,” Jay Bilas said. “Now, we can argue ‘greatest’ – is she the greatest… but she’s a cultural phenomenon unlike anything we’ve ever seen in basketball, in my view.

“And it goes beyond just the scoring record – she’s not just elevated the women’s game, she’s elevated the game. And in that regard, we’ll not see her like again in my judgement.”

Clark, in her fourth season with Iowa this winter, is currently averaging 32.8 points (No. 1 in nation), 6.9 rebounds and 8.5 assists (No. 1 in nation) per game.

We’d call that pretty great.
