Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels
Matz Sels admitted his move to Nottingham Forest was not planned after arriving at the City Ground on deadline day earlier this month.
The 31-year-old completed a £5million move from Ligue 1 outfit Strasbourg, penning a three-and-a-half-year deal. But Sels revealed the move to Forest came as a surprise after ending a six-year stint in France.
“It was not planned that I would leave in January,” the shot-stopper told Voetbal Nieuws. “I wanted to experience the European Championship and then maybe look for a new challenge. But the Premier League is the biggest league in the world and so you shouldn’t think too long about that.”
The Belgian also revealed he only became aware of the Reds’ interest on the day of the transfer. “Apparently Chelsea and BlueCo held talks with Nottingham during the night from Wednesday to Thursday,” Sels added.
“By Thursday morning, everything was pretty much settled between the clubs. That was the signal for me that it might be better to leave. If the club does not want to let you go, they will not do a deal at the last minute.”
Sels appears to have become Nuno Espirito Santo’s new number one choice ahead of both Matt Turner and Odysseas Vlachodimos. The pair joined on permanent deals last summer but neither have particularly convinced, and the club’s stance changed during the January window.
